Can we see some pics of your Amazing Mando-Quatro-lele? That was the coolest instrument at the NEL Uke-a-palooza... You folks are in for a treat if he shows the pics...... |

Thanks for the invite Don, I was trying to work this into a discussion about building hybrid instruments. I was wondering how successful others have been combining different stringed instruments into one build. The “Mandolele” we were calling it, ended up a steel stringed, doubled, 20.18” scale, tuned like a tenor Uke. But could also be played like an Octave mandolin. The decisions for building this instrument has been inspired by many people starting with our own Don Williams who provided the Black Acacia and started a few of us on the path of building a Uke. Somehow I couldn’t bring myself to build a soprano sized Uke, it just seemed like a toy. Since then, I have come to appreciate the instrument a bit more. I figured the tuning like the first 4 strings of a guitar, would make this more playable for me right form the start. It’s only about 10 days old but it feels like I have had it for years. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for looking.. |

The only pic I have of the redwood burl in the "scoops" is from the tail. also showing the ball-ends of the strings at the bridge. My first attempt at a pinless bridge. ![]() Thanks, Wade |

Nice!! The cool thing is, no matter what you build, there's always a musician somewhere who can play it. Have you handed it to any mando players yet? Carlton |

Thanks guys! There was a professional Uke player at the NEL meeting but he was not used to playing the bari tuning. He still played it anyway and it sure was a treat to hear what a pro could do with it. I still think it needs a smiley face but I hear someone has the rights to that.. right Don? ![]() |
